Long Backcombing Comb
Artero Long Crimping Comb 190 — special Westie head mounting
Benefits
Designed for volume and structure work, the Artero 190 Long Backcombing Comb is the ideal tool for creating a chrysanthemum-like effect on a Westie's head, as well as adding bounce to the fringes, whiskers, and ruffs of many wire-haired or medium-length breeds. Its geometry combines fine, rounded teeth to minimize breakage, a serrated base that grips the hair fiber perfectly, and additional teeth at the ends for precise backcombing without leaving marks. The POM (polyformaldehyde) material combines controlled rigidity with ease of use: the comb remains lightweight in the hand, doesn't twist, and glides smoothly through the coat. Heat-resistant up to 120°C, it can be used safely during blow-drying or under moderate heat to set volume while styling. Its 190 mm length provides ample reach for working quickly on large areas while maintaining precision in sensitive areas around the eyes and stop. The result: lasting volume, a cleanly opened hairline before scissor finishing, and clear control of the silhouette, from the ring to the salon.
Use
Always prepare the coat: bath, thorough drying, and parting with a regular comb. For a Westie's head, work in thin layers: isolate a section, place the comb 1–2 cm from the skin, then make short backcombing motions towards the roots to create a base of support. Gradually work your way around the head, controlling the roundness from all angles. On wiry coats, backcombing may be sufficient; on softer coats, combine with a texturizing spray or sprayed chalk, then refine the line with thinning shears or straight scissors. For the cheeks, whiskers, and ruff, use the tips of the teeth for localized backcombing without adding too much volume. Avoid broad strokes that pull the hair; instead, use multiple micro-passes. For maintenance, a light de-backcombing with a fine-toothed comb makes brushing comfortable for the dog. Clean the tool after use to remove powder and product residue, and store it flat away from direct heat.
